Google Gemini App Expands Availability, Reaches More Countries
Google has officially announced the rebranding of its AI service Google Bard. The AI platform is now known as Gemini.
News about this name change had already surfaced a week earlier through posts by the Google Gemini development team on X. Following the rebrand, Google has introduced several updates.
One of them, as reported by GSM Arena (Thursday, February 15, 2024), is the expansion of the Gemini app’s availability to more regions, including Latin America, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Canada.
This update was confirmed directly by Gemini Lead Product Manager Jack Krawczyk through his X account. He also noted that Google is working to bring the service to Europe in the near future.
Although the rollout is happening gradually, Android users can already sideload the Gemini app. According to various reports, the app functions normally even when installed manually.
However, it’s important to remember that Gemini will replace Google Assistant once installed on an Android device. Despite that, Gemini currently cannot perform a number of basic tasks that Google Assistant is capable of.
For example, Gemini cannot set alarms or reminders, launch apps, or access smart home controls.
For context, Google officially changed the Bard chatbot’s name to Gemini on Thursday, February 8, 2024.
Additionally, the company launched a dedicated Google Gemini app for Android devices and integrated all Duet AI features in Google Workspace under the Gemini brand.
