Google Launches Instrument Playground: An AI Tool That Turns Text Into Music
Google is reportedly experimenting with a new AI tool called Instrument Playground, which allows users to create music inspired by instruments from around the world.
Users can also add adjectives to their prompts—such as moody, happy, or romantic—to shape the style of the music output, according to Gadgets Now on Saturday (December 9, 2023).
In its blog post, Google explained that users can add the term joyful to generate a lively, celebratory jingle.
Create and Explore Music With AI-Powered Sound Modes
This AI tool enables users to play and experiment with sound clips by choosing from different modes like Ambient, Beat, or Pitch, offering a wide range of sonic effects.
Additionally, users can try the sequencer in the advanced mode, which supports up to four musical instruments at once.
Since the Christmas season is approaching, Google has also created several festive jingles, including “Chime Chime Ya”, a classic holiday-style composition inspired by bells.
Google has also included iconic holiday sounds such as Santa’s “Ho Ho Ho,” joyful church bells, and “heavenly gongs.”
Trained on 100 Instruments From Around the World
Instrument Playground was trained using 100 musical instruments from various cultures worldwide, including the Veena from India, the Dizi from China, and the Mbira from Zimbabwe.
Users can select any instrument they want to play, and MusicLM—Google’s text-to-music AI model—will generate a 20-second audio clip. Google made MusicLM publicly available in May 2023.
However, the tool is still not fully refined. In some cases, it does not allow prompts that reference specific artists.
