Google Messages Introduces New Wallpaper Feature, Making It Easier to Distinguish RCS from SMS and MMS

Google has launched a new wallpaper feature for RCS chats in Google Messages. According to a report by 9To5Google, this new background design helps users easily differentiate Google’s RCS chats from traditional SMS or MMS conversations.
Based on the report, the Google Messages wallpaper for RCS displays a design featuring overlapping circles that become more prominent when the smartphone uses a lighter theme.
At the moment, there is no option to change the wallpaper design or disable the feature. This suggests the feature is still in testing, as Google has not announced it officially. This information was also reported by Business Standard on Monday (January 1, 2024).
The report notes that once the wallpaper feature rolls out more widely, Google is expected to offer additional customization options—such as selectable design collections or dynamically generated unique wallpapers.
Google may also add an option to sync chat backgrounds between users in the same conversation.
Previously, it was reported that Google is developing a new feature that allows users to edit sent messages in Google Messages.
Several hints related to this upcoming feature have already appeared in the latest beta version. Leaked details show a new editing UI for sent messages along with stored edit history retrieved from the database.
As of now, the feature is still in development and is expected to roll out broadly to Google Messages users in the coming months.
